01 / The brief

A rich musical legacy needed a stronger digital home

Expansion Records has spent four decades building a reputation as one of Britain's most respected independent soul labels, with a catalogue that includes Jean Carne, Dexter Wansel and Booker Newberry III.

But that legacy was being let down by a fragmented digital presence. The label was operating across two separate websites, creating a split identity, unnecessary running costs and a confusing experience for fans, collectors and industry contacts.

Expansion needed a partner who understood both the commercial demands of modern e-commerce and the cultural weight of a label with forty years of history behind it.

02 / The approach

Consolidation, clarity and commercial focus

Rather than starting from scratch, we focused on consolidation and clarity.

The two existing sites were merged into a single unified platform, bringing the brand story, artist profiles and e-commerce together in one place. Every element of the new site was designed to reflect the label's heritage while giving it the technical foundation to compete in a digital-first market.

Alongside the rebuild, we reviewed the label's underlying infrastructure, streamlining the e-commerce setup and correcting configuration issues that had been quietly undermining trust and visibility. Small, invisible problems that were costing real money.

We also built in the facility for Expansion to deliver digital music, video downloads and souvenir brochures directly from its own site, without relying on third-party platforms. For a label selling to collectors, that matters commercially as well as practically: the full margin, customer relationship and control over how the catalogue is presented all stay with Expansion.

The result was a platform that looked as credible as the music it represented.

03 / The outcome

A step change in performance

The impact was immediate and significant.

Sales rose by more than 1,700% within weeks of the new site going live, and growth continued beyond the initial launch period. This was not a short-term spike, but a meaningful step change.

Search visibility improved markedly, helping new listeners and collectors discover the label through organic search rather than relying solely on existing fans. For a catalogue with this much depth, being findable is not a technical detail. It is the difference between a back catalogue and a living one.

Running costs also came down. Expansion now operates from a single, cost-efficient platform with room to grow, without the overhead of maintaining two separate systems.

The result

Better performance, lower overheads and one clear digital destination for the label.

04 / Why it worked

Heritage was treated as an asset

The success of the project came down to treating Expansion's history as an asset rather than something to design around.

A label built on authenticity cannot afford a website that feels borrowed from somewhere else. Our understanding of the entertainment and music sectors meant the label's voice was preserved throughout, while a data-informed approach to design and technical strategy ensured the new platform actively converted interest into sales.

For a label built on four decades of authentic sound, the digital platform now matches the substance behind it.

Brandon McPhee

Building a stronger digital presence for an award-winning Scottish singer-songwriter and accordionist.

The client

Brandon McPhee is one of Scotland’s leading singer-songwriters and a multi-award-winning accordionist, with an established live audience and a growing international following.

The challenge

The previous website was effectively invisible online. It had become static, was not generating meaningful search visibility, and offered no clear route for audiences discovering Brandon through live performances, music releases or touring.

The existing ecommerce platform was also costing considerably more than necessary each month.

The solution

A digital platform built around the artist

We created a flexible, search-focused website that connects Brandon’s music, merchandise, touring and international audience in one place.

  • Dynamic tour dates and ticket-booking functionality
  • Integrated sales and digital downloads
  • Multi-language support for audiences beyond the UK
  • Album previews and music clips integrated throughout the site
  • Built-in search optimisation and content structure
  • A platform designed to build authority and credibility for the artist

The results

A site that performs

The new website now attracts an average of 14,810 unique visitors every month, delivering visibility and reach that had not previously been measurable.

The strongest feedback has come from where it matters most: directly from audiences at live shows.

Website updates are looking amazing. What a great idea with the language and clips of the new album-this is bringing everything to a new league. I’ve had a lot of feedback at live concerts about how good the website is.

01 - The client

An established artist with an underperforming website

Alli Starr is an Emmy award-winning singer and songwriter whose credits include performing with Will Smith.

02 - The challenge

Reputation without a digital destination

Her website was, in practice, a digital business card. It existed, carried her name, and did little else. Fifty-three unique visitors a month is not an audience; it is a handful of people who already knew exactly where to look.

For an artist with credentials at that level, the gap between reputation and online presence was the problem. Anyone who heard her perform and searched for her afterwards found almost nothing to arrive at.

03 - What we built

A site designed to be discovered

We built a dynamic, SEO-focused website that reflects Alli’s authority, credibility, and trust. The new experience gives visitors a clear reason to explore, engage, and stay.

04 - The results

A measurable shift in visibility

Monthly unique visitors grew from 53 to 4,590-more than eighty-six times the original traffic. The site now gives people a reason to stay when they arrive and a stronger digital foundation for Alli’s career.

Why it worked

From an address to a destination

A digital business card asks nothing of a visitor and gives them nothing to do. Building a site that reflects an artist’s actual standing-and making it findable-turns an address into a destination.

The takeaway

Build a digital presence that matches your reputation.

Strategic content, clear positioning, and search visibility can turn an overlooked website into a meaningful growth channel.
